On May 23, 2025, in observance of Jamaica’s National Labor Day, the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project team, led by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), organized a mangrove cleanup initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
The activity was held under the banner of CHEC’s 2025 Eco-Month campaign, themed “Building in Harmony with Nature”—a company-wide initiative aimed at promoting sustainable construction practices and raising awareness about environmental preservation.
Volunteers from the project team, community members, and local partners worked together to remove debris and restore sections of the mangrove ecosystem along the project corridor. Mangroves play a critical role in coastal protection, biodiversity, and carbon absorption, making their conservation essential to both environmental and social resilience.
This initiative reflects CHEC’s broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) vision, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to building infrastructure that not only meets high engineering standards but also contributes positively to the communities and natural environments in which it operates.
By integrating sustainability into project development, CHEC continues to foster strong relationships with local stakeholders and promote shared responsibility for Jamaica’s natural heritage.
