In recognition of Safety Production Month, the Kingston Airport Runway Extension Project conducted a tabletop emergency drill on June 20 to strengthen its preparedness and ensure that construction activities can continue safely without affecting airport operations.

The drill simulated an incident involving cable damage and mechanical failure near a section of the main runway during a planned 300-meter relocation. The scenario was designed to test the response capabilities of the construction team and its partners in the face of potential disruptions to airport functions.

Representatives from the project management team and several collaborating agencies participated in the exercise. The site team responded swiftly by reporting the issue and activating a structured emergency response plan. Seven specialized teams were mobilized, each with clearly defined roles, to carry out rescue, repair, and safety assurance activities under the guidance of field command.

The exercise was closely linked to the project’s safety protocols and risk identification practices. It successfully demonstrated the team’s ability to respond to emergencies, manage on-site risks, and uphold airport safety standards.

“The safety and efficiency of both construction works and airport operations are top priorities for us,” said a representative from the Project Management Department. “This drill reinforces our commitment to proactive safety management and continuous improvement.”

Moving forward, the project team will build on the lessons learned to enhance emergency readiness and risk prevention measures. The goal is to avoid any construction-related disruptions to airport operations and to maintain the highest standards of workplace safety.

This initiative echoes the theme of Safety Production Month: “Everyone Talks Safety, Everyone Knows Emergency—Identify the Hazards Around You.” Through exercises like this, the Kingston Airport Runway Extension Project continues to prioritize safety as a key pillar of successful project delivery in Jamaica.
