Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the National Road Council recently announced the full opening of Route 32 as a four-lane highway, significantly improving traffic capacity and operational efficiency. The milestone has been widely reported by major Costa Rican media outlets.
Transport Minister Zeledón praised China Harbour Engineering Company and the project team for delivering the four-lane opening on schedule, noting that the upgrade will substantially ease long-standing traffic congestion and logistics pressures along the San José–Limón corridor, particularly during peak hours.
Stretching 104.24 kilometers, the Route 32 project is a key Belt and Road cooperation initiative between China and Central America and represents the largest infrastructure project undertaken by a Chinese company in Costa Rica. The project expanded the original two-lane road into a dual four-lane highway and included the construction of 33 new bridges, rehabilitation of 33 existing bridges, and multiple interchanges, overpasses, roundabouts, and auxiliary facilities.
The project team will continue working with the client and relevant authorities to complete remaining finishing works and ensure the project’s safe and orderly final delivery.
